Breakthrough Listen, an international collaborative project to search for extraterrestrials, has a podium on a fast radio blast (FRB) 121102.
The FRB its brief and extremely energetic pulses of radio waves from which mysterious Arab was cut to scientists during the last two years. But the FRBR 121102 is even more special, which is the only one that has been repeated. This feature allowed detailed studies of the source, which lost up to 15 high frequency pulses during single 30 minute scans in this space zone.
"Radio propagation is never considered to be so high frequencies," says Andrew Siemion, director of the Berkeley Research Center SETI and its Breakthrough Listen program.
The project used the Green Bank Telescope, which is capable of recording several gigahertz bandwidth at the same time. This agreement was highlighted. During the five hours of observation, 400 terabytes of data are collected, and there is now research.
"In addition, the source has to be really activated, the high resolution of the data obtained by Listen to measure the properties of these mysteries with a very high precision," says researcher Vishal Gajjar, who discovered the signals
The most likely explanation for the FRB is its transient events. Collisions of neutron stars, hypernovae and other explosions can be posted on the radio. However, a repeating source such as FRB 121101 requires a different explanation. After almost all the radio on the scale, 2.4 billion years from the light of distance, the researchers were able to decipher the mystery a little bit more.
The galaxy is small-isolated on one side of the Milky Way, but it is producing stars with an incredible rhythm. The significance of stellar immersion, by the fact that researchers create the origin of an extremely powerful magnetic neutron star.
But the hypotheses have not stopped appearing. The most repetitive idea is that the claim that is processed in the scope of such user for propellant objects, in a way seemingly the creation of technology Starshot advance to send a small probe has Next Centauri. We will have to continue analyzing the data.
