Google has announced the second generation of its Pixel 2 smartphones, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. While the Pixel 2 looks almost identical to its predecessor, the 2
XL has seen some substantial design changes: it’s jumping from a 5.5-inch display up to a 6-inch display, and that display now covers almost the entire face of the phone. It’s not a perfectly edge-to-edge look, but there are just the trimmest of bezels at the top and bottom of the screen.
With its new devices Google embraces the trend of designs without frames, but only in one of them, and gives them all the power that is expected in high-end smartphones at the end of 2017. All this they have done maintaining its characteristic appearance in two colors that is already a hallmark of the range, as well as updating its interface proposal for Android.

We have already become accustomed to the manufacturers to launch two versions with different sizes of their new devices, and also to be the largest one that takes the best options. In this case we are facing the same situation, and although in terms of processor and memory both mobile are the same, and even share the same technology pOLED for the screens, there are some notable differences.
The main one is frameless design. Google could have taken advantage of both devices to have that design, so that the Pixel 2 5-inch was a delight for those battered users who have been asking for mobile phones of a few dimensions a little more contained. However, not only is it not so, but Pixel 2 has quite considerable frames.

Meanwhile, on the Pixel 2 XL we see how your design without frames helps to contain the size. In fact, they have been able to grow the screen of the original 5.5 inches of the original Pixel XL to the 6 inches of its successor without causing a considerable increase of the device itself. Apart from that, the XL has a QHD resolution of 1440 x 2880 pixels, while users of the "normal" Pixel 2 will have to conform to a FullHD resolution at 1080p.
As for design, there are no more notable differences between the two versions. In the back we both use the same design combining aluminum and glass, and have a single camera that away from the trend of double cameras that have been added most devices, but that compensates as we tell you later . It also maintains that characteristic two-color design on the back, which arouses love and hatred equally, but it is undeniable that it is almost a sign of identity.
At the top rear we have the camera, which is located to the right of the flash in Pixel 2 and to its left in the Pixel 2 XL, and in the central part of the device we find the fingerprint reader. On the front, both devices have a speaker up and one down to provide stereo sound.
All the power to expect in the high range
The differences between Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL end when talking about your muscle, since both share the same configuration of processors and memory. Google has chosen to equip both with the Snapdragon 835 processor, the same that most of the high-end devices that have been launched during this year.
This decision has two readings. On the one hand the company of the search engine has gone over insurance to match the power of all Android phones on the market. However, and this has to do especially with the release date, in a few months the first mobile phones will arrive with the next generation of processors, so they will probably lose some users who always love the latest technology.
As for the memory configurations, in both cases we find about 4 GB of RAM that should be enough for the management of multitasking. They will also feature 64-bit and 128-gigabyte internal storage configurations. To compensate for the lack of a microSD slot, Google offers the ability to store your photos and videos for free in Google Photos, even in their highest resolutions such as 4K.
The only difference in this aspect is found in the battery, which will be 2,700 mAh for the Pixel 2 and 3.520 mAh for the Pixel 2 XL. Google assures that we will have an autonomy for all the day in both cases, will have to prove it thoroughly to verify it, mainly because the battery of the Pixel 2 seems somewhat limited. In any case, they also assure us that we can charge the battery for 7 hours of autonomy in just 15 minutes with the fast charge.
A software dominated by Google Assistant
Gone are the days when Google offered with its Nexus range a pure Android experience with no additions. Their Pixel range is more a showcase than they use to show the progress of their assistant and how you can give more life to Android using a launcher of its own.
Therefore, the most prominent is not so much the first mobile in brand new Android 8 Oreo, but will do so with Google Assistant. This virtual assistant incorporates novelties with which it will try to compete from you to you to Alexa of Amazon and the rest of participants in the sector.
Recently Assistant has received the ability to speak Spanish, but its great novelty is the ability to begin to recognize the context when asking questions. It will not only focus on the question, but on the whole conversation we had with him to know what we were talking about.
There are also changes in the translation system it incorporates. So far we could ask Assistant to translate a specific text, but now we can configure it to translate always from the same language. In this way, it will automatically and naturally translate what we tell you until we ask you to stop.
And then we have the Pixel Launcher, the layer of minimal software that Google incorporates in their Pixel to integrate in them to Google Assistant. The launcher releases a new version in which we will see changes like the absence of that peculiar icon with the G that had at the top of the screen.
The search bar is now at the bottom of the screen, and on it we have placed the icons of the five main applications that we used, which normally always went under the whole. Of course, as in the previous version, to deploy the rest of applications will have to slide your finger up on the screen.
Neither has double camera nor need it
Notes on the camera
Google has been bragging about the camera at all times during the presentation, remembering that last year his was considered the best camera in the market when the phone went on sale. And with Pixel 2 have repeated the azaña, announcing that they have achieved a score of 98 points in DxOMark, surpassing Note 8 and iPhone X as the mobile with better camera. We remember that Note 8 was up to now with 94 points.
The camera itself has 12 megapixels and a f / 1.8 lens, and features optical image stabilization (OIS) that its predecessor lacked. When recording videos, electronic image stabilization (EIS) also comes into play, combined with the help of the gyroscope, to minimize movement when recording videos.
The Pixel 2 again resorted to computer photography as an alternative to the double camera. When you take a photo, your camera records several images, analyzing and combining their pixels automatically and instantaneously with AI models specially trained for photography, so that they get the best possible quality from a photograph.
These algorithms also allow, without needing to use two lenses like most other high ranges, create effects like the popular portrait mode that blurs the background to enhance the faces of the images. And as this is done by software and not by hardware, you can create the same portrait mode with the front camera.
Price and availability
The Google Pixel XL will arrive in Spain exclusively with Orange, and will do so at a starting price of 959 euros.
